The following table includes the inspection frequencies applicable to the different activities of the food chain, which are categorized into activity sectors.
The inspection rate is based on a basic frequency which can be decreased (reduced frequency) or increased (elevated frequency) according to the operator's profile, i.e. by taking into account the potential validation of his self-checking system, the sanctions incurred and, when the basic frequency of inspections is at least once every two years, the results of these inspections. This way, inspection efforts are aimed at operators with a less favourable risk profile.
In the sectors of primary production, processing of food of non-animal origin and distribution, the elevated frequency is replaced - when the basic frequency of the inspections is lower than once a year - by a follow-up frequency. Follow-up inspections allow us to maintain an enhanced control among operators who have had unfavourable inspection results (for example, 100% of the operators in the hotel and catering sector for whom the last inspection has been unfavourable are subjected to a follow-up inspection).
For organizational reasons or because those sectors are deemed less sensitive, the inspection rate for a few specific sectors is based on an annual number of controls (markets, transport businesses, itinerant businesses, ...), a complaint or targeted actions (public houses, guest houses, …)
